Roof edge metal for low-slope roofs
ES-1 Edge Metal and Gravel Stop for New Jersey Roofs
ES-1 edge metal in NJ is the fascia, gravel stop and cleat assembly that finishes the perimeter of a low-slope roof and holds the membrane edge down in high wind. We form it in our New Brunswick shop to the roof edge details on your drawings: face height, roof flange, gauge, cleat, splice plates and corners.
We fabricate; your roofer installs. ES-1 compliance comes from the tested system or engineered design your roofer or designer specifies, and we build each part to that detail.

What is ANSI/SPRI ES-1?
ANSI/SPRI ES-1 is a wind design and test standard for edge systems on low-slope roofs. The building code refers to it for edge securement on low-slope membrane roofs, so the edge stays put in a storm.
Roof edges take some of the highest wind pressures on a building. If the edge metal lets go, wind gets under the membrane and can peel back much of the roof. ES-1 covers how an edge system is designed for that pressure and how its parts are tested for pull-off resistance.
The pressure depends on the building’s location, height and exposure. New Jersey has no single statewide wind value: DCA Bulletin 19-1 directs designers to site-specific values from ASCE 7-based hazard tools.
Who makes a roof edge ES-1 compliant?
The roof designer and the roofing contractor do, through the edge system they choose. Compliance comes from a tested edge system or an engineered design for that building, not from the shop that bends the metal.
- A tested edge system. The specification names a system tested to ES-1 for the required pressure, and the roofer follows its gauge, cleat, fastener and spacing requirements.
- An engineered edge detail. The architect or engineer draws the edge, with the metal, gauge, face height, cleat and fastening designed to meet ES-1 for the building.
Either way, we fabricate the edge metal to the detail you send. Your roofer sets the nailers, fasteners and spacing it calls for, and the compliance documents come from the system or its designer.
If the specification names a pre-manufactured edge product, that tested product comes from its maker. Send the specification section with your plans, and our quote will show which edge parts we fabricate.
Which edge metal parts do we fabricate?
All the formed pieces of a typical roof edge detail. Each is cut on our 10′ shear and bent on our 10′ CNC folder, so every length keeps the same face height and angles.
- Fascia. The vertical face over the roof edge, with a drip at the bottom and a roof flange under the membrane.
- Gravel stop. Edge metal with a raised lip on the roof side that holds back gravel or ballast and keeps water heading to the drains.
- Continuous cleats. Strips fastened along the wall face. The fascia’s bottom edge hooks on, so the face is held along its full length.
- Splice plates. Plates under or over each joint, so the lengths can move with temperature without letting water in.
- Inside and outside corners. Formed in the shop to the angles on the plan, so nobody cuts and patches corners on the roof.
| Item on the detail | What we need to know |
|---|---|
| Metal | Galvalume steel, aluminum (.032″ or .040″) or 16 oz copper |
| Gauge | As the tested system or engineered detail calls for |
| Face height | Height of the vertical face, including the drip |
| Roof flange | Width onto the roof, under the membrane |
| Gravel stop lip | Height of the raised lip, if the detail has one |
| Cleat | Metal, gauge and profile shown on the detail |
| Joints | Splice plates or cover plates; pieces up to 10 feet long |
| Finish | PVDF or SMP color from the coil maker’s chart, or natural metal |
How does edge metal fit with coping and flashing?
Edge metal finishes a roof edge that has no parapet; coping caps an edge that does. Many low-slope roofs need both, plus counterflashing where the roof meets a taller wall.
ES-1 also covers parapet coping, so the edge details often show both, and we quote them together. See metal coping for parapet caps and metal flashing for counterflashing and wall transitions. On a metal panel roof, eave and rake trim come with our commercial metal roof panels.
How do you order ES-1 edge metal in NJ?
Send the roof plan and edge details, or a dimensioned sketch with run lengths. We reply with a written quote within 24-48 hours (business days), or with questions.
- Upload drawings and the specification section on our send plans page, or email info@architecturalmetalpanels.net.
- We send a written quote listing each part, its metal, gauge and length.
- Architectural and commercial jobs get shop drawings for approval where the job calls for them.
- We fabricate the edge metal; the lead time is on your quote.
- Delivery goes anywhere within about a 5-hour drive of the shop, in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware or Maryland. Pickup at the shop is Monday–Friday 7 AM–5 PM.

ES-1 edge metal questions
What does ES-1 mean on a roof drawing?
It refers to ANSI/SPRI ES-1, the wind design and test standard for edge systems on low-slope roofs. A note calling for it means the edge has to be designed and tested for the wind pressure at that building.
Is the edge metal you make ES-1 tested?
Compliance comes from the tested edge system or engineered design your roofer or designer specifies. We fabricate the edge metal to that detail, and the compliance documents come from the system or the designer.
What is the difference between a gravel stop and a fascia edge?
A gravel stop has a raised lip on the roof side that holds back gravel or ballast and keeps water on the roof heading to the drains. A plain fascia edge has no lip. Both have a vertical face and a drip over the wall.
How long is each piece of edge metal?
Up to 10 feet, the length of our CNC folder and shear. Longer runs are made of several pieces joined with splice plates or cover plates, as the detail shows.
Do you install edge metal?
No. We are a fabrication shop. Your roofer installs the edge metal and cleats to the system or design requirements, and field dimensions are the installer’s responsibility.
