What does custom sheet metal work include?
It covers nine product lines, each with its own page. Together they handle the edges, joints and drainage of a building.
Metal coping
Caps for parapet walls, held by continuous cleats, sloped toward the roof and joined with splice plates.
Metal flashing
Step, headwall, counter, valley and kick-out flashing, chimney crickets and pipe flashing.
ES-1 edge metal and gravel stop
Edge metal and gravel stop for the perimeter of low-slope roofs, made to the profile your drawings call for.
Chimney caps
Single and multi-flue caps and chase covers, made to the crown size your installer or mason measures.
Soffit and fascia
Metal soffit panels and fascia covers for roof edges and overhangs, in colors that match the roof and walls.
Custom trim and brake metal
Corners, heads, sills, drip edges, rakes and transitions bent to your profile, typically in 1-2 days.
Box gutters
Liners for built-in and commercial box gutters, with end caps, outlets and scuppers in the same metal.
K-style gutters
5- and 6-inch K-style gutters roll-formed to length from aluminum, steel or copper coil, with end caps, miters and downspout parts.
Custom sheet metal fabrication
One-off and short-run parts from your drawings or sketches, cut on a 10′ shear and bent on a 10′ CNC folder.
Sheet metal also completes our metal wall panel and standing seam roof panel orders. The trims, edges and flashings come from the same shop in matching colors, and wall jobs can add column covers.
Why custom-formed instead of off-the-shelf?
Because older and commercial buildings are rarely standard. A stock drip edge or coping piece fits a new, square wall; a prewar parapet that is out of level and wider at one end needs pieces made to measure.
- Real dimensions. We form each piece to the dimensions your contractor takes on the building, so it fits without heavy caulk or field patching.
- Matching metal and color. Coping, flashing and trim can be formed in the same metal and color as nearby panels or roofing.
- The right gauge for the span. Wider coping and longer trims get heavier metal, hems or cleats so they stay flat and stay put.
- Details that shed water. Drip edges kicked away from the wall, hemmed edges, sloped tops and lapped or soldered joints.
Architectural Metal Panels has been in business since 2000 and in New Jersey since 2018. We make sheet metal for roofers, contractors and owners who have it installed by their own installer. Our shop’s owner has 26+ years in the metal trades.

Which metal should you use?
Prefinished Galvalume steel suits most coping, flashing and trim. Aluminum suits coastal sites and light trim. Copper, mostly 16 oz, suits historic buildings, soldered box gutter liners and work meant to last for generations.
| Metal | Typical uses | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prefinished Galvalume steel (22, 24 or 26 gauge) | Coping, flashing, edge metal, trim, gutter liners | Strong, wide range of PVDF and SMP colors, matches our wall panels and roof panels | Salt-water exclusions in some coil warranties; keep copper runoff off it |
| Aluminum (.032 or .040 inch) | Coping, fascia covers, trim and gutters near the shore | Light and rust-free | Dents more easily, moves more with temperature, is not soldered |
| Copper (mostly 16 oz) | Box gutter liners, flashing on masonry, chimney caps, historic trim | Solders well, very long life, natural patina | Higher cost; runoff stains stone and corrodes steel and aluminum below it |
One rule applies to every job: copper must not drain onto steel or aluminum. Metal Sales’ Galvalume warranty, for example, excludes areas that take runoff from copper or lead flashing. Tell us where each part sits, and plan the water path with your installer so mixed metals never share a drip line.
Near the shore and the bays, check the steel coil warranty against the address; our guide to metal roofing near the Jersey Shore explains the distances. Zinc in 0.7 or 0.8 mm is another long-life option, covered with copper on our copper and zinc sheet metal page.
Why do older New Jersey buildings need so much sheet metal?
Because prewar masonry buildings depend on it. Parapets, built-in gutters, cornices and chimneys all rely on metal to keep water out of the wall, and that metal wears out long before the brick does.
- Parapets catch water on their tops and inside faces. Open coping joints let it into the wall core, where freeze-thaw cycles push brick and mortar apart.
- Built-in box gutters sit inside the cornice. When an old liner fails, water soaks the framing and shows up inside the top-floor walls.
- Chimneys need step and counter-flashing on every side, plus a cricket on the uphill side of a wide chimney and a cap on top.
- Snow and ice load the roof edge and back water up under laps and joints; our guide to ice dams and metal roofs in New Jersey explains why.
Many towns also review exterior changes in designated historic districts. New Jersey’s Municipal Land Use Law lets towns create historic preservation commissions, according to the New Jersey Historic Trust, and Princeton, for example, has 21 historic preservation overlay districts. We can form parts that match original profiles from your drawings or a sample piece; check with the town before material is ordered.

How does a sheet metal order run?
Owners start with dimensions from their contractor; builders start with drawings. Both paths end with pieces formed in our shop, delivered or picked up at the shop.
- Dimensions or plans. Your contractor measures each run and sketches the profile; builders send plans and the sheet metal specification section. Use the quote form, the plan upload or email, or text us a photo of a sketch with measurements.
- Written quote within 24-48 hours. It names the metal, gauge or thickness, finish, profile, lengths and quantities, or we reply with questions.
- Shop drawings. Architectural and commercial jobs get shop drawings for approval where the job calls for them.
- Fabrication. Coping and trim typically take 1-2 days, depending on color and gauge. For other parts, the lead time is on your quote.
- Delivery or pickup. We deliver within about a 5-hour drive of New Brunswick: New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland, with the delivery cost quoted with the order. Pickup is at the shop during office hours, Monday–Friday 7 AM–5 PM.
There is no minimum order; only custom (non-stock) colors carry a minimum quantity. Have a lower written quote for the same parts? Send it with your request and we will match or beat it. Finish warranties come from the coil maker.
Your installer removes the old metal, repairs blocking where needed and sets the new parts, and any permit follows the larger roof or wall job. General contractors and architects can send drawings on our send plans page, or see how we work on the for contractors page.
Custom sheet metal questions
What is the difference between coping and flashing?
Coping is the metal cap on top of a parapet wall. Flashing is any formed metal that steers water away from a joint, such as where a roof meets a wall or a chimney. Coping is really a specialized kind of flashing.
How quickly can you make coping or trim?
Coping and trim typically take 1-2 days, depending on color and gauge. Written quotes come within 24-48 hours of receiving dimensions, a cut list or plans, and other parts show their lead time on the quote.
Is there a minimum order?
No. A single chimney cap or one length of trim is quoted the same way as a building’s worth of coping. Only custom (non-stock) colors carry a minimum quantity.
Can you match existing copper work on an older building?
Often, yes. We form copper, mostly 16 oz: send a sample piece or a dimensioned sketch of the original profile, and we tell you whether we can match it. New copper starts bright and darkens with weather. In a historic district, check whether the town needs to approve the work first.
How do I know if my parapet or box gutter is leaking?
Stains or peeling paint at the top of interior walls, white salt deposits on the brick below the coping, rotted cornice wood and ice at the eaves are common signs. Have your roofer or contractor find where the water enters, then send us their dimensions for the replacement metal.
Do you work on homes as well as commercial buildings?
Yes. We fabricate sheet metal for houses, older mixed-use buildings and commercial buildings. Homeowners with their own installer can request a quote; builders can send plans.
Which metal lasts longest?
Copper is the long-life choice; the Copper Development Association cites estimates of more than 100 years for copper roofs. Prefinished steel and aluminum cost less and can last for decades when they are detailed and installed well.
Can you make a part from my drawing?
Yes. Send a dimensioned drawing or sketch with the metal, gauge and finish, and we quote it within 24-48 hours. Our custom fabrication page explains what a good drawing shows and when a template from your installer is the safer choice.
Do you deliver sheet metal to the Jersey Shore?
Yes. We deliver within about a 5-hour drive of our New Brunswick shop, which takes in the Jersey Shore. Near salt water we usually suggest aluminum or a coil whose warranty covers the site, and your installer should use fasteners that suit the metal.
Do you install coping, flashing or gutter liners?
No. We are a fabrication shop. We make the parts to your contractor’s dimensions or approved drawings, and your roofer, sheet metal contractor or installer puts them in. Field dimensions are the installer’s responsibility.
